Any product aiding in the eternal quest for long-lasting makeup piques our interest. And, when the offering is coming from e.l.f. Cosmetics? Thrilled. Thanks to its affordable and efficacious formulas, e.l.f. is a go-to brand in every makeup category, but we have a soft spot for its complexion products.

Building off the mega-viral success of Power Grip Primer,, e.l.f.'s newest launch offers the same gripping and long-lasting power but with mattifying properties. Ahead, discover everything you need to know about the new Power Grip Matte Primer, as well as my full review.

The Product

e.l.f. Cosmetics

Think of the Power Grip Matte Primer as the younger, more (oil) controlling sister of e.l.f.'s OG Power Grip Primer. It's got the beloved sticky, tacky texture, but also helps reduce the look of excess oil and shine for a smooth, blurred complexion. Like the e.l.f.'s other two Power Grip Primers, the matte version retails at $10 for 26 mL. It also comes in a pocket-sized, travel-friendly version, which is priced at $5.

The Formula

This one is for the combination, oily skin type folks out there. Unlike the original, formulated with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid to create a dewy finish, the matte version is infused with a lemon myrtle blend. If you're unfamiliar with the hero ingredient, lemon myrtle can help reduce the appearance of oily skin and prevent clogged pores by controlling the sebum production in your skin. In addition, the water-based Power Grip Primer contains skin-soothing niacinamide, which can help reduce inflammation and redness.

My Review

Abby Dupes / Byrdie

As a true combination skin girly, my face can look like the desert one day and an oil spill the next. So, when it comes to complexion products, I like to have options on hand to suit whatever mood I (and my skin) are in. After using e.l.f.'s Power Grip Matte Primer, I can confidently say it has earned a place on my vanity. For reference, when I get oily, it tends to land in the center of my forehead, upper lip, and chin. When paired with a medium-coverage foundation, I found this primer helped control that mid-day shine that I get in those spots, with no blotting papers or powder needed. At just $10 a pop, this primer is an easy add-to-cart.
